HOW TO APPLY

Before completing an application, you’ll need to prepare a resume and draft a cover letter.

When applying, you can identify research projects from a list of solicited projects submitted to your academy (and available from your academy POC) or research LLNL for projects that interest you.

Researchers will start to hear from academy cadets and midshipman in October, typically following the visit to your academy and presentation of LLNL opportunities. The earlier you reach out to Lab researchers to express interest in an academy appointment, the better your chances as you compete with your peer academy applicants. The objective is for the researcher to assess your interest and skills and for you to decide (and possibly rank) the project(s) you want to support. Ultimately, the researcher will determine who s/he wants to host. Another excellent reason to talk to researchers, as they will select from those they are communicating with!

It’s your responsibility to research LLNL to identify projects and researchers. The breadth of research at LLNL is so wide that it is impossible for us to provide a comprehensive list of potential projects—or for someone to identify exciting projects for you based on your major. Thus you have the solicited projects and/or you can research LLNL and reach out to the researchers performing work that interests you.

Keep in mind, your respective academy must authorize your appointment to LLNL. These decisions may not occur till January or February, which includes determining if you have 4 to 6 weeks available for the appointment based on your other military summer requirements. We understand that you will not know your availability till February or later.
